About Samba Dancing
Samba is one of the hottest ballroom dance that hit the contemporary scene today. But did you know that samba traces its roots back to Afro-Brazilian culture? In Brazil, the African slaves called samba a religious ceremony characterized by the rhythm and choreography of the batuque, the batuque being the act of “batucar”; to make some kind of rhythm using an instrument or object.
In the 1930s, a group of musicians led by Ismael Silva founded the first Samba School, Deixa Falar. They transformed the samba dance to make it fit better the carnival parade. Soon samba became so popular that samba became Brazil’s official musical and dance form. In the following years samba has developed in several directions from the gentle samba-cancao to the drum orchestras which make the up the music of the carnival parade.
Samba has a very specific rhythm, highlighting the best characteristics of Brazilian musical instruments: originally called tamborim, chocalho, reco-reco and cabaca. To achieve the true character of the Samba a dancer must give it a happy, flirtatious and exuberant interpretation. Many figures, used in the Samba today, require a pelvic tilt or Samba tic action. This action is difficult to accomplish, but without it the dance loses much of its effect. Principal characteristics of the Samba are the rapid steps taken on a quarter of a beat and the pronounced rocking motion and sway of the dancing couple.
